Christmas Star On a clear night in the Brecon Beacons, you can see the Milky Way, major constellations and bright nebulas but tonight, clear-skies allowing, there is a chance to see meteor showers and the Christmas Star On Monday, December 21st, Jupiter and Saturn will appear closer to each other than for nearly 400 years. It's around 800 years since they were so easily visible. For the rest of December they will appear to be super-close in the post-sunset sky ... IThe Christmas Star is called the 'Great Conjunction' because Jupiter and Saturn are the two largest planets in the Solar System, and to the naked eye they'll look like a single bright star. It will happen just after sunset in the southwestern sky Although you can see 'shooting stars' from the Ursid meteor shower at any time between December 17-26th, the event peaks on the night of December 21st/22nd All on the exact date of the December solstice, how about that for a brilliant way to end the stargazing season Picture of the night sky above By the Wye by Gwilym Pugh

As the frenzied madness of Black Friday begins, please remember our local and small businesses, the lifeblood of our economy and communities. Without our indepe...ndent businesses, market traders and high street shops, our little town of Hay-on-Wye would not be the amazing, vibrant and independently spirited place that it is. And for every small business that you are supporting you are also directly supporting local people and families. Please #shopindependent this Black Friday. Don’t give Jeff Bezos, the world’s richest man, any more of your money, he really, really doesn’t need it. And if you prefer doing online shopping at the moment then remember that many of our local businesses also offer this service. As the saying goes, if we don’t use it, we lose it... We Wool Its #NationalWoolWeek - an annual event run by The Campaign for Wool. According to their website, this is a multi-national campaign that was initiated in October 2008 by His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales, who had observed that the wool industry was facing enormous and unprecedented challenges. Challenges included competition from synthetic fibers, reduction in sheep flocks and reduced prices for wool that made it difficult for wool farmers to continue making... a living. Some of the goals of this campaign: Raise awareness of the problems facing wool farmers and the possibility that wool as a fiber is being threatened. Social education about the eco-unfriendly ramifications of a world without wool. Encourage fashion brands, department stores, carpet makers and others to take on the challenge of supporting wool. Promote the wonders of wool! All of our safari tents come furnished with wonderful Welsh woolen blankets and snuggly sheep fleeces, perfect for cwtching under on Autumn evenings.
