True story. A couple of weeks ago I arrived at Camp Tracy at 3:50 pm to wait for Katie to come out of the woods at the end of the day. I watched well over 100 k...ids come out but no Katie. I was approached by a camp counselor who told me Katie was down the trail dragging her back pack on the ground because she had filled it with rocks. I went down into the woods and there she was. Sitting on the ground with her backpack. One counselor was with her and told me she was not supposed to stay with one camper but Katie would not empty her pack. Katie was crying. I took her backpack and it was heavy. Like 30 pounds. I carried it out with her and she told me there was one ginormous rock as big as my head in the backpack. We got home and emptied the rocks onto her rock painting table. There it was. The big one. That night I learned Thomas D. Turlo was very ill. We painted that rock gold and Katie drew a heart on it. A few days later that rock was placed on the Turlo Trail marker at Camp Dirigo with Tom’s family present. Tom saw a photo of it and said he loved it. 8 days later he went to heaven. I have to believe Tom’s love of youth and MAINE had something to do with Katie putting that rock in her backpack and dragging it out of the woods. She was the last camper out of Camp Tracy that day. Tom’s love of Maine, love of the woods, love of our youth is not over. More great things will come from Tom Turlo. He will continue to inspire us from above. Thank you Tom. See more

A special sign for a special man. Turlo Trail will be dedicated next week at Camp Dirigo in honor of Tom Turlo in appreciation for his love of Maine, dedication to the Boy Scouts, and his respect of the flag. Camp Dirigo is honored to have Turlo Trail in its fold. Thanks to Woods Edge in Oakland, Maine, for getting this sign made on short notice.

Mitchell Pond work continues. The banks have been sloped and we will lay down hay and grass seed next month. Gravel may be added to seal the bottom of the pond.

Fly fishing the Kennebec at Camp Dirigo on June 23, 2019. Colonel Jack Mosher / Gold Star Outfitters made a great instructor and we had a great day in the water.

We were ready to stock Mitchell Pond today with 300 trout but had a bit of a set back. The expert (40 years of experience) who arrived from the State licensed fishery told us there was not enough oxygen in the water and that the banks of the pond were too steep and needed to be pulled back to prevent erosion. He offered some very good advice on how to move forward. So, no fish going into the pond today. We will plan on getting the heavy equipment back out to the pond this summer to do some more earthwork and look to stock the pond next spring. Nothing is easy but we will get it right and drive on!
